Providence boasts the largest number of working artists per capita in the country. The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), located in Providence, is one of the nation’s top art universities. The RISD Museum of Art showcases over 80,000 works of art from all periods and around the world. The Gallery at City Hall features an eclectic collection of works by local artists. Gallery Nights are popular arts events in Providence. On the third Thursday of each month, a free bus takes visitors on an art quest throughout the city’s 24 local galleries and museums.

Not to be missed, Waterfire Providence is a striking symbol of Providence’s art renaissance and possibly the best reason to visit Providence. Several nights each month from mid-May to mid-October, 100 bonfire “sculptures” illuminate the three rivers that flow through downtown Providence. The fires are tended from sunset to midnight by mysterious black-clad performers in torch-lit boats. The crackling flames and aroma of pine and cedar fill the air. Enchanting music from around the world stirs the imagination and emotions of thousands of residents and visitors strolling along river walks. There is no charge for Waterfire. It is a unique and unforgettable gift of art to the residents and visitors in Providence.
